Chandeliers have been around for a long time… Therefore there are a lot of chandeliers available on the market! We look for pieces that will stand the test of time in quality and style.

Our fantastic chandeliers are sourced from Europe and are available in:
- Finishes of silver, off-white or rust.
- Round (9 arms) or oval shapes (with 8 or 16 arms).
- With or without shades.

What do we want to achieve when we choose to use chandeliers?
Is it a light we need in that location? Or is it a visual object we need to break the space?
If we need to light that space, what do we want to achieve with that light? Do we want to have a focus light spreading light on the table or do we want to throw light around in that space?

These questions need to be answered first when sourcing for a light or chandelier.
It is important to think about using a chandelier just as a decorative object and/or for its lighting qualities as well.

Chandeliers can do both! They do work as light providers and act as a visual object in a space, particularly in hallways and dining areas.

With these chandeliers you can create some dramatic styling with or without using the separate shades that are available.

Among others, one of the interior designers that has been using our chandeliers on numerous projects is Patricia Stewart. See her stunning work here: www.psddesign.com.au

Tokens of Living is the proud distributor for Australia of the Aubrey oak timber floor from Europe.

Made from the finest hardwood timbers and European oak from a FSC certified Croatian plantation and made in their Dutch factory, finished with natural oils. Upon request it can be aged by smoking and steaming treatments.

In our furniture and flooring showroom in Darley street in Mona Vale we have numerous sample boards available. You will find treated boards smoked by ammonia, steamed or just finished with natural oils.

The Aubrey flooring has a lot of differences and appeal above other flooring.

A). The first point of difference is the stability. Most flooring warps and cups in the Australian climate, as it is very difficult to keep timber stable, especially with wider boards. We have found that a lot of architects have stopped specifying wider boards because of the instability and problems after laying the floor.

Our floor boards have been developed 15 yrs ago to be used with under floor heating in Europe. Under-floor heating normally varies the temperature of the floor from 5 degrees to 24 degrees. To make this possible it means that the boards need to be of a very stable condition. Aubrey’s multilayered floor is made up from hardwood veneer layers, laid in different fibre directions to create stability. The boards are glued in one press run: the oak and hardwood veneers are pressed at the same time in a press, making it a homogenous product. It is of much higher quality and weight than the so called engineered boards which are made of standard ply with a separate top layer, separately glued onto it.
Aubrey floor boards are available in 16, 19 and 22 cm wide and are 20mm thick.

The flooring can even be used in wet areas like bathrooms.

B). The second point of difference is the appeal and appearances this floor has. It is pre-finished at the factory, allowing the manufacturer to quality control the whole process. The floor has a large choice of details: it can be delivered with or without machined edges or hand scraped edges. Knots can be filled or remain open, the grade of timber can be grade A or B or natural, it can be aged by smoking or steaming.
The Altimago aging treatment is done by either smoking with ammonia or steaming. The smoking treatment ages the natural fibers of the oak to a timeless finish and appeal. The steam treatment darkens the oak and will give it a through out treatment and colour change. Much better for maintenance than the widely used staining techniques, which only gives it a surface treatment and therefore a higher maintenance schedule.

Natural oils are use to seal the floor. It will give the floor a natural (NON-gloss) look. Some colours will have pigments added to the oils to achieve the required look.

C). The Third point of difference is the Maintenance. These floor boards are finished with natural oils. For maintenance the only thing required to do is to jut reapply the oil. Normal use requires adding oil once or twice a year on area’s where the floor becomes a bit worn. You do NOT need to re-sand and finish this floor. It will become better looking over time.

D). Fourthly: Interior Decorating
When asked for interior decorating advice we found that a lot of customers just choose their flooring on the look of the timber instead of also looking at the decorating freedom and flexibility the floor should give you. In our opinion a floor is the base for making a space work. When the floor is chosen correctly, the decorating of the space is much easier.
For example: the yellow pine floor with polyurethane gloss finish, we all know so well, will make it very hard to make your interior pieces match with the floor. In our opinion it is impossible and one will not end up getting it right!

The natural tones of our flooring will do exactly what we are trying to achieve: it will give you decorating freedom, flexibility, ambiance and timelessness in your space.

The dining area was decorated with a large steel mirror. The Tobias Grau lights we used were the Tai Lang in bronze over the table and the OH7 in bronze over the servery. The area needed some warmth added to it and we used fabric chairs and Armadillo Rugs to soften things up. When we were finished the existing floor looked three times as good!

Sharing our passion for Design, Architecture, Interiors, Lighting, the Arts, Living Spaces and the Great Outdoors.

- Emotion in Architecture and Design
Why is it that we feel emotion when we enter a living or working space?
Why is it that a piece of furniture can look fantastic in a photo, but doesn’t give us any feeling when we see it in the flesh?
Why does that particular piece of art move you and not your neighbour?
Why are architects around the world trying to create living or public spaces that inspire you and move you?

We believe that it is important to create your own living space that suits you as a person. More and more so now, the whole world moves into your life by use of computers, internet and TV.
It is important to almost create a sanctuary for yourself and a retreat from everyday life. To be re-charged.
Interiors are important. Mood lighting like Tobias Grau is important and this is a scientifically proven fact! It is a proven fact that efficiency is better in workplaces where the interior has been personalised. Australia in our opinion is lacking behind a lot of other countries.

So why aren’t we more involved in creating living environments that make us feel good? We should be!

-Create a home not a house.
We try to challenge you in creating a home and not a house;
A home is personal and emotional.
It might still look good in a photo but a house is impersonal and without soul.

-Mix styles
Therefore mix up styles to make your own.
Don’t go ‘Contemporary’. Don’t go ‘Antique’. Don’t go ‘French provincial’.
If you buy a style it will not be yours. With the world on your doorstep you can tap into all styles of this planet whether it is industrial or modern or antique, it can all be combined and blended together. We are not saying it is easy! You might need help from a professional, but please take the challenge and do what you are about and not what the magazines or the Joneses tell you to do.

-Less is more
Although our shop is full of products that are picked with ambiance, character, mood and uniqueness in mind, we note that too much of it will not create the ambiance you are after. In our opinion it is better to acquire less. Pieces should be statement pieces. If you do this, it will always work… Ah I will hear you say that that will be expensive. It will not be. We just challenge you to spend your budget on less but better pieces and your whole interior will look much better than the many cheaper items that create clutter.
Do you know that the interior costs of the loose furniture in an average household varies between 3%-6% of the value of the property? Makes you think hey!? Maybe we should give up that 4th bathroom.

-Interior/Exterior
We would like to compare a building with a human being.
If only the outside looked good and the interior did not get any attention, there would be no soul to the total and it will only have a shallow experience. It will be not a lasting experience and decay and disease will set in.
It is the same with houses as it is for humans. Care for your the interior!

-Light creates mood and ambiance.
Light is a great source to make magic happen. Why do we go to the theatre and feel like we are taken into another world? It is not only the warmth of the fire that attracts you to it.
To focus on Sydney: It still has a Winter feel about it for at least 4 mnths. We do not have long Summer evenings like the Northern European countries. Is there any reason not to play with ambiance light? Challenge yourself to do more than the down lights that the sparky will put in. Don’t make it an after thought!

-Quality and Sustainability
We should take care of our planet and we need to act now. We believe that within our industry we should focus more on quality than on the throw away/easy to replace products that the world seems to work with.
One of the points in Copenhagen has been to put a quality level in place for all manufacturers, so that the reject % of products should be below a certain percentage. Did you know that a well-known coffee machine brand moved to China to be able to produce cheaper and that the recall rate of machines that didn’t work was about 15%. This 15% of machines gets taken back and dumped in landfill. What a waste of resources and labour.

At Tokens we focus on quality products that will last longer and that will not be used as landfill after a short time. Preferably you could hand it over to the next generation. Particularly our Tobias Grau lights, Aubrey flooring, Windsong Outdoor Collection, indoor/outdoor tables and cabinets are focused on this.

-Sustainability/FSC
All hardwood products we carry are either recycled or FSC certified.
FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is widely regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last decade to promote responsible forest management worldwide.

Over the years we have found that it is relatively easy to make a drawing or sketch and have it approved by the client. The tricky bit is when the final product is handed over, whether the client has visualized the same end result: To achieve that the expectations of the client will match what we expect to make. This relies a lot on our experience and the client’s perception.

It is after all unique furniture design with a high personal preference, style and taste.

To achieve this, clearly the best way is to have a reference in the shop like an existing piece of furniture for colour and appeal, backed up with a detail drawing.
The other way is to highly detail the drawings in 2D, possible in 3D and make a colour sample part (like a door) for the client to approve.

All unique furniture designs and custom furniture at tokens of living are handled in this way, to minimize a disappointed client after wards.

We will try to use local materials as much as we can to minimize the carbon footprint. For sustainability reasons we will only use FSC certified timbers.

If you have a custom product idea, a unique furniture design or project for you private use, we can also assist you in designing and manufacture your product. We can use our extensive network of tradesmen, sculptors, foundry, artists, etc to realize your idea.
